Jack Gilbert's Dry Wit

The first Jack Gilbert poem I ever read:
FLAT HEDGEHOGS: [for Isaiah Berlin]

When the hedgehogs here at night

see a car and its fierce lights

coming at them, they do the one

big thing they know.
[From Refusing Heaven]

It made me chuckle, so I read on and on and on and now Jack Gilbert is one of my favorite contemporary poets.
