Happy Birthday Marines!


This Day in History

On this day in 1775 the Continental Congress created the Marine Corps as a division of the Navy. I was in the Army but..., Semper Fi, guys!

Something to think about...

If you are one of those who dates the nation's founding from the Declaration of Independence, that means that the Corps is older than the country. Just a little reminder that the whole process of creating a country was a lot more complex than is generally appreciated.

Something else to think about...

Today also marks the execution in 1865 of Captain Henry Wirz, commander of the Andersonville prison camp. What did he do to deserve death? That's right! He mistreated U.S. prisoners under his control. Hmmmm.
