Philip Gourevitch has a piece in the latest New Yorker describing the ongoing catastrophe in Zimbabwe that marvels at Mad Bobby Mugabe's successful defiance of western pressure. What the article does not notice is that Mugabe's monstrous regime is the logical outcome of Maoist, anti-colonialist ideology. The failed state, the brutal suppression of dissenters, the demonization of the West..., all too familiar.
