To clarify: the title is excerpted from Act 1 of Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost. The full quote goes: "Light, seeking light, doth light of light beguile; So ere you find where light in darkness lies, Your light grows dark by losing of your eyes." It's a warning against spending too much of your life in scholarly pursuits.

Calvin in America
Five hundred years ago today John Calvin was born. Damon Linker has an interesting article in the New Republic on the ways in which Calvin's ideas influenced American culture. I don't completely agree with his take, but there is no denying that an understanding of Calvinist thought is essential to an understanding of American history and culture. Read the article here. There's a lot in it to think about.
