This is one of those themes that will never go away because people have an interest in keeping them going. Cathy Young of Reason Magazine, writing in the Boston Globe, has a nice piece on Tripp's book, its limitations, the public and professional responses to it, and the agendas that inform journalistic commentary on it. She is particularly hard on Andrew Sullivan, and justifiably so. This is one of those times when the academic professionals really shine. Their isolation from the mainstream of American life and their training provides them with the perspectives and habits of thought necessary to provide a useful corrective to the excesses of popular journalism.
