Rome, 2005

The NY Post has a writeup on HBO's upcoming series, "Rome," set in 54 BC. The producers promise to take Rome "out of the museums" and put it on the screen. The prospect is not heartening. There is a lot of talk about the seamy side of life. '''Rome' will feature more sex and possibly disturbing ritualistic scenes than fans of period films are used to, while common wisdom about historical figures is likely to be shattered. Cleopatra is portrayed as a dinner party bore instead of the vampy siren fans are used to." The city itself will look like a cross between "New York and Calcutta" -- "there is mud everywhere." For some reason this doesn't sound interesting. Count me out.
