Reports were moving on the internet last night regarding a supposed coup taking place in Damascus. I reproduced the report, which originated with an Israeli backed organization in Lebanon called "Lebanese Foundation for Peace," but tagged it as "probably bogus." Publius Pundit has checked with his sources in Syria and they say that there was no coup, not even a hint of one. See here. So we can safely say that the report was "completely bogus." I'm going to delete it.
That does not, however, mean that the threat of a coup is not there. Assad, as I noted in an earlier post, is in a very bad spot and is quite likely to face challenges to his leadership in the near future.
Parenthetically, I would note that these really stupid actions and statements by a recognized ally of Israel within Lebanon can only make things worse, both for Israel and for the Lebanese people.
