Disappointing But Not Unexpected

The Transatlantic Intelligencer notes that the French government is backing off on their commitment to freedom of the press. The party line seems to be..., freedom of course, but... it must be balanced by respect. There have even been hints of legal action to constrain freedom of expression. [here]

EUPolitix reports that the European Parliament is considering setting up a "code" for journalists. [here]

I sympathize with the sentiments. Freedom should be constrained by responsibility, but that, I would argue, is not, repeat NOT, the government's call to make. Denounce journalistic irresponsibility all you want, but don't mess with the freedom of the press.
