One of the most interesting and provocative thinkers of recent decades has been Alan Macfarlane, Professor of History and Anthropology at King's College, Cambridge. Check out his site here.
In his work Professor Macfarlane has challenged many of the fundamental assumptions that have shaped the social sciences for more than a century. I have been particularly impressed by his critique of the pervasive dichotomous distinction drawn by such seminal thinkers in the social sciences [Hey, easy on the alliteration: ed.] as Marx, Weber, Tonnies, Durkheim, and Simmel between "traditional" and "modern" cultures.
But that work, significant as it is, represents but the tip of the iceberg [Easy on the cliches too: ed. OK, OK, remember I'm new to this blogging thing.] Professor Macfarlane's interests span the globe. He has done important work in many parts of the world. What is more, he has worked hard to make his studies accessible to the general public. Visit his site, read some of his articles and view the films. I think you'll be as fascinated as I was.
