As the debate over aid to Africa escalates in the wake of the G-8 summit and the associated hijinks by entertainment ghouls, keep this in mind.
1) President George W. Bush has been far more supportive of aid to Africa than any of his predecessors and has significantly increased the US contribution during his term in office. The result is that the US is by far the largest contributor to African relief in the world. [here]
2) By the African Union's own estimate, Africa loses as much as US$148-billion a year to corruption.... A recent World Bank survey on Africa claims "the amount stolen and now held in foreign banks is equivalent to more than half of the continent's external debt." [here]
Now, tell me again why Bush should not insist on strict accountability for future US contributions to African development.
