Is This the End of Roe? Not Likely!

Gaby Wood, writing in the Guardian, suggests that Democrat liberals are willing to abandon Roe v. Wade.
Last autumn, in the midst of a presidential election, America's Democrats were fighting furiously to protect what they described as a constitutional right - to have an abortion.

But in an extraordinary turn of events, some argue that it is the single issue standing in the way of their election prospects. They are daring to say what once was regarded as heresy - that it is time to let the argument go.

Abortion may still be the most divisive issue in the US, but in a move indicative of creeping conservatism, Democrats now seem happy to amend - even relinquish - their position on it.

It is true that the abortion issue has long been hurting Democrats at the polls, and that the idea of "letting Roe go" is being talked about, but I fear we are far from the point where the Party is willing to embrace that option. Barring another catastrophic showing in the off-year elections Roe will remain a sacred cow for the Democrat leadership. We will in all probability keep hearing "legal, safe, and rare."

The only Democrat leader who could conceivably modify the party's position on Roe is Hillary Clinton. She could be "Nixon to China" on the issue, but I have seen nothing to suggest that she is willing to make that move [although what a Sister Souljah moment it would be].

UPDATE:

Maybe there's something to this. Mickey Kaus has picked up the theme and declares it
Good for democracy, good for Democrats, good for the rule of law--and OK for "choice."
