Maryland Politics -- Mfume Trails in Fundraising

The WaPo has a long piece on Kweisi Mfume who is challenging Ben Cardin for the Democratic nomination for Senator. It notes the Kweisi trails Cardin badly in fundraising, but has strong support within the black community. Interestingly, according to his spokesmen's statements in the article Cardin's main claim to the nomination seems to be that he can raise money that will be necessary to defeat Republican Michael Steele.

The article also dredges up and extensively treats the smear campaign against Kweisi launched by some NAACP staffers, noting that it hasn't really hurt him [but not for lack of trying by WaPo Cardinites].

The only real information here is the nugget that, should Kweisi beat Ben, the Republicans will run a "character" campaign.

Read the whole thing here.
