Baltimore Pictures

I've been posting pictures taken in Pennsylvania for the past few weeks. For a change today I'm going to do some taken down in Baltimore.

First the secular. This is the ceiling over the bar at "Gertrude's" restaurant in the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Now the divine. The image of John the Baptist in bas relief on display at the Peabody.

Still on the theme of St. John the Baptist, who needs to go to Florence when you can view Ghiberti's magnificent bronzes [in replica] for the Baptistry of St. John at the Peabody? Ghiberti started the originals when he was twenty-one years old. He was forty-two when he finished. Among the artists he beat out for the contract were Brunelleschi and Donatello.

["She Who Must Not Be Named" complains that the full-scale image is a bit blurry. That's because the ancient camera I was using only has a couple of megapixels and can't handle this level of detail.]
