Rev. Jeremiah Wright has been excoriated for his comments on America's chickens coming home to roost. Putting his comments in context may, for some, mitigate their effect. It turns out that Rev. Wright was simply delivering a standard Chomskyite rant about the many victims of American power. It's a narrow and distorted view of American history, and it is disturbing to think that a presidential candidate might subscribe to it, but it is not so far outside the range of current intellectual discourse as it might seem. Many people in the academic community hold similar views.
