To clarify: the title is excerpted from Act 1 of Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost. The full quote goes: "Light, seeking light, doth light of light beguile; So ere you find where light in darkness lies, Your light grows dark by losing of your eyes." It's a warning against spending too much of your life in scholarly pursuits.

John Hope Franklin Is Gone
One of the greatest, certainly one of the most influential, historians of my lifetime has died. John Hope Franklin passed away two days ago at his home in North Carolina. He was 94.
Here's the New York Times obituary. He was a remarkable man.
And, (my wife will appreciate this) he grew orchids..., lots of them..., big ones, small ones, rare ones..., you name it.
