To clarify: the title is excerpted from Act 1 of Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost. The full quote goes:
"Light, seeking light, doth light of light beguile;
So ere you find where light in darkness lies,
Your light grows dark by losing of your eyes."
It's a warning against spending too much of your life in scholarly pursuits.

Why We Need Monsters
John Miller has a nice piece on how we have drained vampires and other monsters of their horrific potency and in the process made them boring, and more importantly what this shift in sensibility says about us.
A society that has trouble recognizing monsters in its art probably will have difficulty identifying terrorists at its airports.
