Merkel Falling

Just a month ago Angela Merkel looked to be a sure thing in the upcoming elections for German Chancellor -- but my how things can change.

The Scotsman reports:

GERMANY'S conservative leader went on a damage-limitation mission to eastern Germany yesterday after ill-judged remarks by colleagues threatened to deny her what had looked like certain victory in next month's general election....

Mrs Merkel has also blundered, getting confused over economic terms in TV interviews, and seemed put out at a rally when party bigwigs behind her were laughing at a joke as she tried to excite the audience.

So, Mrs Merkel, who spent her formative years as an easterner, ventured back there yesterday to try to put her campaign back on track.

Read it here.

What is disturbing here is not Merkel's collapse [she's apparently not ready for prime time], but the rapid gains made by the left, riding a wave of anti-globalization sentiment.
