The Republicans' Last Chance to Stop Harris

Florida Republicans, desperate to stop Katherine Harris from carrying the GOP standard against Senator Bill Nelson next year, are flailing wildly. The Pensacola News Journal reports:

Republican Party leaders are courting Joe Scarborough to replace U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris in the 2006 Senate race against Bill Nelson.

Scarborough, a cable TV talk-show host and former U.S. representative, has met with senior party officials who are encouraging him to challenge Harris, said Collier Merrill, a Pensacola businessman active in the Republican Party, on Tuesday.

It just doesn't get any more desperate than that.

UPDATE:

The Hill has an article by David Hill itemizing the reasons Harris should win this election:

1) She's a celebrity and that attracts attention.
2) She's much smarter and more attractive than usually portrayed -- that means that she'll exceed expectations.
3) Bill Nelson is a dud who consistently underperforms expectations.
4) Harris has a statewide constituency among "old Floridans" [people whose families have been in Florida for more than one generation].
5) Harris wins the ideological competition -- there are more conservatives in Florida than liberals.
6) Harris' record on environmental issues will appeal to moderates.

Well, maybe....

Interesting -- but she still looks like some alien, mutant critter on TV, and that's gotta hurt. I'm sorta rooting for her because she's taking on the establishments in both parties. Gutsy lady!
