Northern Ireland -- Just Like the Bad Old Days





Remember all those stories last month about how peace had finally returned to Northern Ireland? At the time some observers were pessimistic [here]. I was unsure. Well, here are some scenes from Belfast and the environs.

Over the weekend Protestants, claiming that the British government was withdrawing troops without addressing their security concerns, rioted.

Reuters reports:

Rioters hurled petrol bombs, set light to hijacked cars and shot at police in the worst unrest in Northern Ireland for years.

"It's just like the bad old days", said one Catholic shopkeeper, who had to pick his way through broken bricks and glass to get to work on Monday.
