Pennsylvania Politics -- Santorum Plugs a Gap

Ever since he backed Arlen Specter for reelection against Pat Toomey, Rickey Santorum has had a problem with his Republican base. Conservatives were resentful and promised revenge when Santorum next came up for re-election [next year, for you out-of-staters]. Now Santorum has reached out to Toomey and has brought him on board. Santorum's website announces:

Pittsburgh—Former Congressman Pat Toomey today endorsed the re-election campaign of Senator Rick Santorum.

Said Rep. Toomey, “When I look at the record of the two major candidates in the race for Senate - what they have done for Pennsylvania, what they have done for our nation, their vision for the future - endorsing Rick Santorum is one of the easiest decisions I have ever made. I look forward to passionately campaigning for his re-election.”

That's going to help, and let's face it Rickey needs all the help he can get in his campaign against little Bobby Casey, Jr. The announcement also heralds one of the themes Santorum hopes to exploit -- taxes. He praises Toomey as being, " a champion for Pennsylvania families’ pocket books."
