Steyn Does it Again...,

Mark Steyn, at the end of one of his patented dissections of the foibles of the Democratic Party, actually makes a very good point:

He writes:

Republicans may see the increasingly arthritic, corpulent, wheezing, flatulent Democratic Party as a boon for them, but I don't. Two-party systems need two parties, not just for the health of the loser but for that of the winner, too. Intellectually, philosophically, legislatively, it's hard to maintain the discipline to keep yourself in shape when the other guy just lies around the house all day.

Read it here.

He's right. There are plenty of signs that the Republican majority is itself becoming increasingly fat and lazy. Delivering pork works well for individual congress critters, and for lobbyists, but it erodes the vitality of the party. Republicans have to stand for something more than the new highway bill.
