WorldCon in Glasgow

The Times reports on the 63rd World Science Fiction Convention, being held this year in Glasgow, Scotland.

This is the hard-core crowd -- not trekkies [sorry, "trekkers"] or Star Wars fans.
THERE wasn’t a pointed ear in sight or a snatch of Klingon to be heard. No, it’s a serious business being a delegate at the world’s biggest annual gathering of science fiction fans.

To most of the 4,000 delegates who travelled to Glasgow, around a third from North America, for the 63rd World Science Fiction Convention which opened yesterday, Trekkies and their ilk are quite simply the lunatic fringe.

Read the whole thing here.

You can see some weird things at WorldCon. If I remember rightly, Newt Gingrich was a speaker at one of them.

And I hate to correct so eminent an authority as the Times, but to these guys it isn't "SciFi" [they would call that "skiffy"] but "SF".

The problem here is that these middle-aged fans are so determined to be respectable that they've become dull.
